Empty Bowls Dinner: Thursday, November 21st

You are Invited To The 4th Annual “Empty Bowls” Dinner
Thursday, November 21st
5:00 PM to 6:30 PM
Sadie White Room (Room 108) at the CCV campus in Winooski.

Please stop by to purchase a hand-made bowl, enjoy some soup and bread, and learn about how we are working within our neighborhood to address the issue of hunger.  Proceeds from this event will benefit a local food-shelf, The Little Green Pantry, here in Winooski.

“Empty Bowls” is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.

It is the collective genius of all the people involved that has made Empty Bowls what it has become. Events have now taken place across the United States and in at least a dozen other countries. Many millions of dollars have been raised and donated to hunger-fighting organizations.

The largest hunger-relief organization in the United States, Feeding America, reports that the nation’s food banks could soon be overwhelmed by demand. Statistics show that 1 out of 6 Americans struggle with food insecurity every day. Millions of people have lost their jobs during the most recent recession and the number of food stamp recipients has increased dramatically. Your help is needed now more than ever.

Please come and join us in our effort to help with hunger relief.  Suggested minimum donation for a hand-made bowl, soup and bread is $5.00.

Hike For Hunger! Join CCV on Saturday, September 28th

Saturday, September 28th, a CCV team made up of students, faculty and staff will hike a 3 mile loop.  Each CCV team member can ask friends, co-workers and community members to make an online donation in their name; all donations will benefit Hunger Free Vermont.

Last year, Hunger Free Vermont helped over 145,000 vulnerable Vermonters to get nutritious and affordable food.  Each day they work to help feed children, families, and neighbors as well as teach communities to cook.  The organization works every day to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters.  This hike is great way to generate enthusiasm and warm-up for CCV’s annual Harvest for Hunger that takes place every October.

When: Saturday, September 28, 2013
How: Follow these easy steps:
·         Hunger Free Vermont is asking that all team members either raise $25 to hike or pay a $25 registration fee the day of the hike.  All proceeds benefit Hunger Free Vermont.
·         All donations should be collected online.  You can ask friends, co-workers, and neighbors to visit CCV’s team page.   Donors will see a prompt that says, “Dedicate my donation to someone,” and they can write in your name.
·         All hikers must complete a registration form to hike.
·         There is no registration fee for children 6 and under; however, all participants must complete a registration form and those under the age of 18 must have a minors release form signed by a parent/guardian.
·         Check- in with Hunger Free Vermont begins at 9:30.  Once you have checked in, look for Laura Rubenis who will be leading the CCV team of hikers.  Laura will be holding a CCV tee-shirt above her head so you will be able find her.  Team CCV will embark on the hike as a group at 10:15.
·         You can arrive early and warm up with Evolution Yoga and cool down with a community celebration including: wood-fired pizzas from  NOFA-VT, Chessters from Rhino Foods, a bluegrass band, and t-shirts.

We hope you will join us for what promises to be a fun-filled event for a good cause. You’ll have the opportunity to meet students and faculty from around the state (hopefully!), enjoy some sunshine and hiking, and raise money to combat hunger in Vermont.  Plus, research tells us personal connections are an important factor in student success and may boost attendance and retention; this event encourages those personal connections to blossom – what a great bonus!

Vermont Women in Higher Education Award goes to CCV's Pam Chisholm!

From the Vermont Digger web site:

"The Jackie M. Gribbons Leadership Award: Pamela Chisholm

The Jackie M. Gribbons Leadership Award is presented to a woman who has demonstrated leadership ability, served as a model and mentor, developed innovative programs, and contributed significantly to the institution and profession. Pamela Chisholm’s career in Vermont higher education spans 30 years, and during that time she has become a well-respected expert on financial aid systems and programs. In her current position as associate dean of enrollment services at Community College of Vermont, she has “improved the student-friendliness of systems and enhanced college access and success for literally thousands of students,” her nomination states. An initiative she led at CCV to allow financial aid for textbook purchases has helped many low-income Vermonters attend college. Her leadership extends to professional organizations including the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, and VASFAA."

Congratulations, Pam!!

The Hungry Heart Premier at CCV Winooski: October 18th, 7:00pm

The Hungry Heart explores the world of prescription drug addiction through the intimate world of Vermont Pediatrician Fred Holmes who works with patients struggling with this disease. The film provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of addiction and recovery and reveals the many challenges that Dr. Holmes and his patients face in confronting a relentless and difficult disease.

As the film progresses we begin to see the simple but profound connection that Dr. Holmes creates with each patient. For many of the young people in the movie, coming to Fred is less about getting a prescription for their addiction and more about connecting with a mentor who listens to them—if only for ten minutes a week. The film shines a light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many of these young addicts yearn for but do not have in their lives.

In addition, the film interviews a number of older addicts who talk about their recovery process juxtaposed against Fred’s patients. The road to recovery is paved with both success stories and strewn with relapses, downfalls and tragic losses. However, through the movie we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their continued search for a life of recovery.

Film running time 93 minutes
Directed and produced by Bess O’Brien

All shows at 7pm – No tickets in advance all at the door.
