About the Drive, by Kylee Heingartner:

A refugee is a person who is forced to leave his or her home and seek refuge elsewhere.

Refugees have experienced a great deal of struggle, uncertainty and loss. I am running a clothing drive to help support the refugees who have come to Burlington to seek shelter and a place of safety. This clothing drive is directed at the people of our community. I want to provide the refugees who do not have the means of providing for themselves with clothes for all sorts of weather, shoes for mobility, and books for the younger and older generations.

This clothing drive is designed to ensure that each individual in our community is healthy and comfortable, which in turn will have a positive impact on society when each individual is living a more nourished lifestyle.

Unfortunately, many would-be donors throw away perfectly good used clothes rather than offer them to a supportive cause. Through this project I intend to inspire hope and self-confidence for people all walks of life, to assist them in feeling successful, valuable and dignified. By recycling clothing, shoes and books we are reusing resources that are limited on our planet. This is an environmentally sound way of consuming less and providing more!

The CHAMPLAIN COLLEGE 2011 SPRING JOB FAIR is less than two weeks away, and you're all invited!

Thankfully the job market appears to be improving as 100+ diverse employers will be recruiting for a wide range of full-time, part-time and summer employment opportunities and internships. The Fair logistics are as follows:

• DATE: Monday, March 28, 2011
• TIME: 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
• PLACE: Champlain College Gymnasium and Fireside Lounge within the IDX Student Life Center, 262 South Willard Street, Burlington (building #21 on campus map)

Individuals may park in Champlain College parking lots or neighboring streets if there is space available, except the Main Street Suites lot. There will be no ticketing on the day of the Fair. However avoid “resident only” parking areas, as the City is strict about ticketing and towing. The College also has a satellite lot with shuttle service, which runs a continuous loop to the center of campus from 7:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., Gilbane Lot/Lakeside Shuttle.

Thanks to the generosity of Burlington City Arts and the Board of Directors of Hunger Free Vermont, we are thrilled to present Art for Social Impact.

Texas-based photographer Michael Nye’s exhibit About Hunger and Resilience—brought to the UVM Davis Center by Hunger Free Vermont and the Vermont Foodbank—will open on March 27th.

In anticipation of the exhibition, local filmmaker Bess O’Brien and local photographers Dan Higgins and Caleb Kenna will join Nye to discuss how art can affect deep and lasting social change. Fran Stoddard of Vermont Public Television will facilitate the panel for this event that is free and open to the public.

Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments provided.

Marlboro's VT Student Visit Day Friday, April 1st

Marlboro will be hosting VT Student Visit Day on campus Friday, April 1st.

The day is designed to offer college-bound Vermont students individualized admissions, financial aid counseling and a "Finding the Right College" workshop. We will offer a campus tour and lunch as well. April 1st is also the priority application deadline for fall '11 transfers

Steps to Take Before You Graduate!

Access your Program Evaluation:

1. Log in to Blackboard.
2. Click on the navy blue box labeled 'VSC WebServices.'
3. Click on the 'Students' link.
4. Click on 'Program Evaluation.'

If you have difficulty finding your Program Evaluation, check out this handout for step-by-step images.

Fill Out Your Intent to Graduate Form:

If you are planning to graduate, please fill out the Intent to Graduate form, and return it as soon as possible. You can mail it back or leave it at the CCV reception desk at 1 Abenaki Way in Winooski.

Complete the QR (Quantitative Reasoning Graduation Standard and Assessment):

In addition to coursework, students must also fulfill a graduation standard in Quantitative Reasoning.

The QR Assessment is an applied math assessment (20 questions) that you have up to 2 hours to complete; you must accurately respond to at least 75% of the questions to fulfill the graduation standard.

If you still have to complete the QR Assessment (you can check to see if you've fulfilled the requirement by reviewing your Program Evaluation), please:

1. Contact your advisor to register for the QR assessment (DEV-1010).

2. Call the CCV Winooski site (802-654-0505) to schedule a time to come in and take the assessment between 8:30am and 5:00pm, Monday-Friday.

Living Downstream: Film Showing and Panel on March 25th

For Wellness Week spring, 2011, CCV Winooski has the privilege of screening the one hour documentary Living Downstream based on the book by Sandra Steingraber.

In a nutshell, the film “…breaks the silence about cancer and its environmental links.”

Please join Heather Fitzgerald’s Current Environmental Issues class at CCV Winooski on Friday, March 25th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the Sadie White room (108).

This free event is sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. A panel composed of local experts will enrich the discussion following the film.

You're Invited: CCV Faculty Art Opening this Friday!

Mary Zompetti Lowe has a photography exhibition, "And then..." opening next Friday, March 18 at the 215 College Gallery from 5-8pm, and we would like to invite you to the opening reception!

This show is a continuation of her neighborhood explorations and is all color. The opening reception has a "neighborhood potluck" theme, so there will be great baked goods as well!

If you can't make it to the opening, the show runs through April 17 and the gallery is open Fridays, 12-8; Saturdays, 12-6 and Sundays, 12-4. The gallery is at 215 College St, which is near the intersection of So. Winooski, above Stone Soup.

'Invisible Children' Film Screening on March 20th

Invisible Children is a social, political and global movement using the transformative power of story to change lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. They are sponsoring a free Film Screening Sunday March, 20th @ 6PM in the Fireside Lounge, at the Hauke Center at Champlain College.
