Student Success Week (September 29 - October 3, 2008)

This week is Student Success Week at CCV Burlington! This week, the fifth week of the semester, is a time when many students start to feel the pressure of impending midterm exams, papers, and other due dates.

In order to help alleviate the stress of this busy time, students can stop by the Learning Center (Cherry Street Building, room 204) to pick up some great resources on student success skills like time management, stress relief, note taking, math study tips, and much, much more. We also have free snacks available in the Learning Center an the 119 Pearl Street lobby! If you are having problems with your classes and need help, please stop by to pick up some resources, have a bite to eat and maybe even speak to an on-call academic advisor.

CCV Hallway Galleries: Isaac Wasuck

CCV’s latest hallway gallery installation is by Isaak Wasuck. The image presented here is titled Matter of Timing (oil on canvas) and is one of the many pieces included in the latest art installation at the Community College of Vermont in Burlington.

Wasuck was born in St. Albans, Vermont. Following high school, he ventured west, as many before, and tried to discover what should be done in life. After working a 9 to 5 job and working on sheep farms in New Zealand, came back to the states and moved to Philadelphia. He attended the university of the arts and received, four years later in 1999, a BFA degree. Since graduation, has moved many more times to various places around the east coast before settling down in Burlington. In this little spot in the world he tries to focus intently on painting, photography, and whatever other art falls in his path, and establishing himself as a contender in the 'art world'.

For Isaac, creating art is a constant failing attempt to escape meaning. His catalog tells a long, drawn out, unintended and detailed story of his life as a fugitive from substance. Artist’s intent is always implied and overcoming the paradox of his 'this means nothing' theme is an impossible trap. His work is a document of trying to overcome the impossible.

Ann Clayton Barlow: FROM HERE TO THERE...

Ann Clayton Barlow, a member of CCV Burlington's art faculty and Vermont artist, will have a gallery exhibit of her work on display from September 26 - December 13 at the Firehouse Center's Community Darkroom (135 Church Street, Burlington, Lower Level).

In FROM HERE TO THERE: reflections on contemporary landscapes, Barlow explores environments that evoke spaces for contemplation and speculation. An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 26 from 6 - 8 PM.

Jenny Gundy: Wait Until Dark

Jenny Gundy, a CCV faculty member and Vermont Adult Learning (VAL) counselor, is currently performing in the Waterbury Festival Players production of Wait Until Dark.

Carol MacDonald: Cast On, Bind Off

Carol MacDonald, a member of CCV Burlington's art faculty and Vermont print-artist, will have a gallery exhibit of her work on display from September 26 - November 1 at the Firehouse Gallery (135 Church Street, Burlington).

In Cast On, Bind Off, MacDonald examines the tradition of knitting through a variety of print-making techniques. In this new series of work, she reflects on the repetitive and therapeutic nature of this traditional handicrad, detailing the intricate techniques of knitting, as well as creating monoprints directly from garments she has knit herself. An activity based upon processes and patience, MacDonald sees the act of knitting as respectful of both space and time--rare commodities in today's world of instant gratification. Through the examination of this labor-intensive, defiantly manual practice she seeks to remind us that slowing down is a necessity in order to hear our own voice in a hectic and chaotic world.

There will also be a panel discussion titled "Following the Creative Thread" on Friday October 24, at 7 PM. Carol will be talking about the development of her work and Charlie Purinton, chaplain will be speaking about art, creativity and healing.

Blog Action Day

On October 15, the CCV Burlington Blog will be participating in Blog Action Day 2008. Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. Their aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion and this year's topic is poverty. For more information, check out the video at the bottom of this post.

Global issues like poverty are extremely complex. There is no simple, clear answer. By asking thousands of different people to give their viewpoints and opinions, Blog Action Day creates an extraordinary lens through which to view these issues. Each blogger brings their own perspective and ideas. Each blogger posts relating to their own blog topic. And each blogger engages their audience differently.

Would you like to write for Blog Action Day? If so, send your contribution to Adam Warrington (adam.warrington@ccv.edu) by Tuesday, October 14. What you write is up to you... so long as it is around the theme of ending poverty. Maybe you just want to contribute a paragraph or a quote. Or maybe you want to share a paper from one of your classes. The sky is the limit and the more voices the better.

CCV Hallway Galleries: Capturing Ireland by Jolene Ford

CCV’s latest hallway gallery installation is by Jolene Ford, a Williston resident and Community College of Vermont student. Capturing Ireland is a series of photographs that were taken by Ford during CCV’s spring 2008 study abroad trip to Ireland.

When she’s not in class, Jolene raises four children, 2 year old twin girls and boys ages 13 and 11. Jolene loves photography, and her work is displayed in a South Burlington art shop Candles & Creations, and at Lily Pond in Plattsburgh, New York. In 2007 she had a collection of painting, poems and photography displayed in "Art and Healing of the Mind" an art show dedicated towards the self regenerative properties of creating art.

Capturing Ireland is currently on display through September 29 in the first floor hallway of CCV Burlington’s 119 Pearl Street building.

Fall Alternative Weekend Trip Now Accepting Applications!

CCV is now accepting applications for our fourth Alternative Weekend trip to take place from Thursday, October 23rd to Sunday, October 26th. Students will have a chance to take part in an all expense paid trip to Hartford, Connecticut to volunteer at several fantastic non-profit organizations. This is a great opportunity to meet some new folks and do some excellent service work outside of Vermont!

CCV Breaks Ground

This morning, the Community College of Vermont broke ground on its new Chittenden County facility at a soggy, but well attended ceremony. CCV Art Professor Exibits Work

Nancy Stone, CCV professor for Introduction to Book Arts, will be participating in The Book Arts Guild of Vermont's upcoming exhibit. An opening will take place this Friday, September 5 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm as a part of Burlington's First Friday Art Walk. The exhibit will be on the second floor of the Burlington City Arts’ Firehouse Gallery (135 Church Street) during the month of September, including the Burlington Book Festival taking place during the weekend of September 12-14.

Smith College & Mt. Holyoke College Visit CCV Burlington

Representatives from Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges will be visiting CCV Burlington on Friday, October 10, 2008 at noon. Join us for lunch and learn about two exciting transfer programs for women 24 or older.

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program at Smith College and the Frances Perkins Program at Mount Holyoke College offer women of nontraditional college age an opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Art degree. Students attend the same classes and fulfill the same requirements as do all other Smith and Mt. Holyoke students. Their strong motivation and commitment provide an example for students of traditional college age; the diversity of their life experience enriches the classroom and their expectations challenge the faculty.

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program and Frances Perkins Program combine rigorous academic challenges with flexibility for women beyond the traditional college age by providing options for reduced course loads, special academic advising, career counseling and diverse housing options. Both schools participate in the five college consortium enabling students to take classes at Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst, the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College. Financial aid is available to each woman with demonstrated need.

Many CCV women students have transferred to Smith and Mt. Holyoke successfully. Presently there are over 400 students in these programs. Some bring their families with them, some come alone, some with a partner or spouse. Most arrive having earned between 32 and 64 transferable college credits in liberal arts courses.
