Spanish Class Blogs

Mario Martinez’s Spanish I and II classes at CCV Burlington and Conversational Spanish at CCV St. Albans are currently using blogs to publish their writing. The blogs provide the students a means to apply the grammar and vocabulary that is taught in their classes and to write on a subject of their choice. Their writings provide a basis for in-class conversations and discussions on their story subject matter or related topics. Professor Martinez receives the documents from the students and provides feedback about their grammar and vocabulary. After this, students make their corrections and their story is added to the blog. It provides a means for students to feel proud of their learning and what they are producing.

The effect of this has been to make the students more excited, committed and serious about their writing and about Spanish. The blogging itself is helping the students to become familiar with what a blog is and provides them with ideas to pursue their own independent blogging for other purposes. It has become a tool for creating a Spanish community in CCV. In addition, their writings can be used by other educational institutions and encourage other students to study Spanish at CCV.

Winooski site forum for students and faculty

CCV students and factulty... we want (and need) to hear from you! There will be an open forum on Thursday, February 28th from 5pm – 7pm in Conference room 2A (2nd floor of the 119 Pearl Street building) to discuss our new facility to be built in Winooski. Your participation will help us design a new building that we can be proud of. Please RSVP to Dawn Tetrault by either calling 865-3043 or sending an email to dmt12180@ccv.edu. We hope to see you there!

Some of the questions we will have for you:

1. When you think about space that is designed for students to use for study or meeting purposes outside of the classroom, how do you envision such spaces? One large space (apart from a library/learning center) or several smaller spaces located throughout a facility?

2. When you think of space for faculty uses: preparing for classes, grabbing a bite to eat, meeting with a student as you may need, should we be considering a centralized location for such spaces or several spaces throughout a facility? Should we have spaces assigned around curriculum-specific classrooms?

3. What are your thoughts about amenities or services that are important/beneficial to CCV constituents that should be near our new Winooski facility?

Student Success Week

February 25 - 29 is Student Success Week at CCV Burlington! This week is a time when many students start to feel the pressure of impending midterm exams, papers, and other due dates. In order to help alleviate the stress of this busy time, students can stop by the lobby at 119 Pearl Street to pick up some great resources on student success skills like time management, stress relief, note taking, math study tips, and much, much more. We also have free snacks available! If you are having problems with your classes and need help, please stop by to pick up some resources, have a bite to eat and maybe even speak to an on-call academic advisor.

Greetings from Louisiana

Mica DeAngelis, an academic advisor and coordinator of visual arts courses at CCV Burlington, and her husband Barry have spent the last three weeks working with Habitat for Humanity in Louisiana. Here is an update and some pictures that Mica recently sent us:

We volunteered for three weeks in Lacombe, LA, a city just north of New Orleans that was flooded after Hurricane Katrina. Most homes had 8 feet of water from the storm, others were totally destroyed by the winds, etc.. Habitat was building two houses a year in this city before the storm, this January we finished the 100th house since the storm hit. We were working with 20 other volunteers on a small development of 15 homes. I am painting baseboards in one photo, the other photo is of Barry and I outside the same home. A single mom of two will be moving into this house in April. We hope all is well in VT and look forward to returning soon.
