Source to the Sea River Clean-up

The College Council and our Student Advisory Board invite you to join us for our FIRST ANNUAL Source to the Sea River Clean-up on Saturday, Oct. 3, 9AM-1:30PM at the Upper Valley CCV. In partnership with The Connecticut River Watershed Council and The White River Partnership, we’ll be joining a team of VT volunteers in the 13th annual effort to help clean up the Connecticut River and its tributaries. A homemade chili-fest will follow at the Upper Valley site. For more information and to sign-up, please contact Jennifer.alberico@ccv.edu or laura.rubenis@ccv.edu.

What a great way to get outside, enjoy the foliage and meet CCV folks from across the sites!

Volunteer with Americorps!

Each year CCV receives several Americorps positions that offer students of all ages an opportunity to earn scholarship money in exchange for service work. You can choose a term of service of either 300 hours or 450 hours to be completed over one calendar year. Your service can be fulfilled by volunteering at non-profit organizations in your community. You can choose to work at one organization or many – it’s up to you. Some organizations students have volunteered with in the past are:

· The Boys & Girls Club
· Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf
· The Greater Burlington YMCA
· The Peace & Justice Center

This is truly a great opportunity to earn up to $1,250 in scholarship money through service work for others. To be eligible, all applicants must either be a US citizen or permanent resident and at least seventeen years old.

CCV Burlington will be hosting an informational session on Thursday, October 1st from 3:00-4:00 in their Pearl St. location. For more information please contact Ian Boyd at Ian.Boyd@ccv.edu.

Smith College & Mount Holyoke College Visit

Representatives from Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges will be visiting CCV Burlington on Friday, October 9, 2009 at noon. Join us for lunch and learn about two exciting transfer programs for women 24 or older.

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program at Smith College and the Frances Perkins Program at Mount Holyoke College offer women of nontraditional college age an opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Art degree. Students attend the same classes and fulfill the same requirements as do all other Smith and Mt. Holyoke students. Their strong motivation and commitment provide an example for students of traditional college age; the diversity of their life experience enriches the classroom and their expectations challenge the faculty.

The Ada Comstock Scholars Program and Frances Perkins Program combine rigorous academic challenges with flexibility for women beyond the traditional college age by providing options for reduced course loads, special academic advising, career counseling and diverse housing options. Both schools participate in the five college consortium enabling students to take classes at Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst, the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College. Financial aid is available to each woman with demonstrated need.

Many CCV women students have transferred to Smith and Mt. Holyoke successfully. Presently there are over 400 students in these programs. Some bring their families with them, some come alone, some with a partner or spouse. Most arrive having earned between 32 and 64 transferable college credits in liberal arts courses.

Please contact Mica at CCV, 865-4422 or deangelm@ccv.edu for more information or to RSVP for the informational luncheon.

Local colleges explore renting a textbook concept

The Burlington Free Press has a blog post about an idea that may be catching on in higher education - renting a textbook. Click here to read the post:

http://tinyurl.com/lw52vw

The UVM bookstore, which is where CCV Burlington students get their textbooks, is considering adding this option for the spring. Stay tuned for more details and hopefully lower textbook costs.
