CCV receives $2.5 million job-training grant from the DOL!

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 – The Community College of Vermont will receive a $2.5 million job-training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Vermont congressional delegation announced today.

The grant comes through a career training program, said Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.).

"The Community College of Vermont has a proven record of effective service to students, communities, and employers in Vermont,” the delegation said in a joint letter to U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis supporting the grant request.

The college has matched course offerings with what employers say are the most-needed skills. A new Community College of Vermont program offers a fast-track associate degree for adults enrolled in courses that provide training in high-demand, high-growth career fields.

Service Fair & Ice Cream Social a Hit!

Last night, around 200 CCV Winooski community members enjoyed interacting with representatives from local Winooski agencies while enjoying some Island Homemade Ice Cream.

Thank you to the Winooski Coalition, the Winooski Underground Teen Center, Casey Family Services, The Winooski Senior Center, and Vermont Works for Women for taking the time to share some great service opportunities with the many students that visited.

We look forward to hosting this event next year and hope you can make it!

Invisible Children Film Showing: Thursday, September 15th

CCV has arranged for the organization INVISIBLE CHILDREN to visit CCV on Thursday, September 15th, from 6:15- 9:00. They will be showing two short films, provide a speaker from Uganda and staff who will facilitate a discussion with our students.

A bit about INVISIBLE CHILDREN: At its start in 2003, the mission of Invisible Children was simply to document the story of the kids in northern Uganda and share it to as many people as possible through the distribution of the Invisible Children: Rough Cut. Through massive and immediate grassroots support, the story of Invisible Children rapidly spread throughout the U.S. It has inspired millions of people to get involved in international issues, in using their civic voice in Washington, and specifically speaks to a younger generation who are looking for their significance.

There will be opportunities to purchase merchandise crafted by Ugandans to help support the micro-economic businesses INVISIBLE CHILDREN has helped launch. The event is free; donations to support the work of INVISIBLE CHILDREN are welcome.
